Police are on the hunt for a Florida man suspected of killing his longtime girlfriend while visiting relatives in North Carolina for Christmas, cops and her distraught relatives said.
The body of Jessica Cortez Luna — a 28-year-old mother of four from Tampa, Florida –was discovered by cops in Durham, North Carolina, following a 911 call of an assault early Saturday, police said.
Luna’s sister, Maria Cortez Luna, told WRAL that the woman’s boyfriend of five years, Jorge Maya Gomez, 28, allegedly fatally shot her during an attack witnessed by her 7-year-old son. The couple had a history of domestic violence incidents involving physical and verbal abuse, Luna told the station.
“My heart is pretty broken,” Maria Cortez Luna said. “We kind of thought this was going to happen one day, but she kept on going back to him all the time, and we couldn’t do anything. I wish we could have done more.”
Gomez, who is also from Tampa, was being sought Monday in Luna’s slaying. He should be considered “armed and dangerous,” police said.
Gomez was last seen driving away from the home where Luna was discovered lifeless in a black 2016 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado truck with a North Carolina license plate of HEW-3881. He’s about 6 feet tall with a thin build, short brown hair and a long goatee, police said.
He had not been arrested as of midday Monday, a police spokesman told The Post.
The couple had recently moved to Tampa, but were in North Carolina visiting relatives when Luna was killed, relatives told WRAL.
Luna was last seen by her sister at about 6 p.m. on Christmas – when Gomez appeared to be drunk, her sister said.
“I want to let other women know that are going through this domestic violence to say something before this happens,” Maria Cortez Luna told WRAL. “Nobody wants for this to happen.”
Luna is survived by four children, according to an online fundraiser dedicated to help offset her funeral costs. They range in age from 12 to 7 months, WRAL reported.
