A California woman at an outdoor New Year’s Eve celebration was struck in the head by a stray bullet fired by a gun-toting reveler who fired into the air, authorities said.
The woman was in a friend’s back yard in Fresno when the stray bullet fell from the sky, hitting her on the head just after midnight, KFSN reported.
Shay Orozco, who hosted the party, recalled wishing everyone a happy new year when she noticed her friend’s head bleeding.
The unidentified woman was taken to a local hospital and was released that same day.
Fresno police said about 1,700 shots were fired between 6:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 6:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Police say they’re trying to track down the alleged shooter through technology that scans gunfire activity in the area.
Orozco said hearing gunshots in her neighborhood around New Year’s is nothing new.
“You hear every year, you know you hear the gunshots, you hear that people are outside shooting, but you never really think about what happens when the bullet drops,” she told KFSN
