A Springville, Utah man is accused of shooting his mother in the head at the dinner table before going on to dance with his teenage sister in apparent celebration, new documents in a grim murder case reveal.
According to Crime-Online, Utah man Mike Lopez, 23, has been charged with murder in the December 23 dinner table killing of his mother Victoria Ramirez, 43, at their home.
The suspect’s two younger sisters, ages 14 and 17, were both present at the time of the murder.
Now, new police documents indicate that Ramirez may have known her son was going to kill her.
Authorities in Utah are investigating the bizarre murder of a Utah woman by her own son, and initial reports indicate both the victim and the suspect’s younger sister may have been aware of his intention to kill his mother.
“I know you’re going to kill me, and I love you,” Ramirez told the Utah man who then allegedly murdered her at the dinner table.
The Deseret News reports that Lopez was armed with a shotgun the night he is accused of killing his mother.
“All four were seated at the dining room table when (Lopez) pointed a shotgun directly at the victim,” police documents claim.
“Mike turned towards his 14-year-old sister and they gave each other a head nod,” a police affidavit stated.
The 14-year-old then locked herself in an adjacent bathroom while the 17-year-old remained outside the door.
After the Utah mom told her son that she knew she was going to be murdered, police say that Lopez shot Ramirez in the head at the dinner table.
Authorities say she was killed instantly due to the force of the blast.
The younger 14-year-old sister then exited the bathroom and went to stroke her dead mother’s hair, police alleged.
Lopez and the younger sister then began dancing next to Ramirez’s body. According to KUTV in Salt Lake City, the 17-year-old sister locked herself in the bathroom and called her older sister, before escaping out of a window. The unnamed eldest sister contacted police.
When police arrived, they found Lopez in the basement bathtub, without any apparent injuries.
The 17-year-old sister allegedly told Utah police she believed her younger sister knew about Lopez’s alleged plan to murder their mother at the dinner table.
She also claimed that Lopez supplied her younger sister with marijuana. Police have said the 14-year-old girl was uncooperative during an interview, but she is not apparently facing any charges. Lopez has likewise been uncooperative in multiple interview attempts, according to police.
Lopez remains in custody, as authorities have said they believe he may flee to join his father in Mexico if he is granted bail. Lopez’s father reportedly fled the country amid a separate criminal investigation.
It was not immediately clear if Lopez has an attorney available to comment on the charges. According to ABC affiliate KTVX, Lopez faces one count of murder, one count of domestic violence in the presence of a child, and a count of firearm use by a restricted person.
Lopez was later booked into the Utah County Jail where he continued to act unresponsive and would not speak with officers, a probable cause statement said.
