A mystery man may have tried to thwart the gunman who opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indiana late Thursday — pulling out his own gun in vain before being shot dead, according to a witness.
Levi Miller, who works at the plant in Plainfield just outside Indianapolis, was on break when he heard the quick succession of gun shots in the parking lot.
“My friend at the time witnessed a man who was not part of the incident but also pulled out a gun from his truck to try and engage the shooter and he died because of it,” Miller said Friday morning on NBC’s “Today” show.
Miller, who was about to work a second shift that night, recalled seeing the gunman and hearing his indecipherable screams as shots were being fired.
“I see a man, a hooded figure … the man did have an AR in his hand, and he started shouting and then he started firing at random directions,” he said.
Police said at least eight people were killed at the plant and five others injured in the 11 p.m. shooting spree near the Indianapolis International Airport.
The gunman was also found dead of an apparent suicide.
None of the identities have been released so far, as investigators are still trying to piece together what happened.
“We actually know very little at this point in time,” Craig McCartt, deputy chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police, told “Today” on Friday. “We don’t have a lot of information on [the suspect] yet as he has not been positively identified.”
Four of the victims suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds, while a fifth victim was in stable condition, McCartt said.
He said because of security measures in place at the facility the gunman “did not get very far inside.”
A White House official said President Biden would be briefed Friday morning on the deadly shooting, while White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain has been in touch with the mayor of Indianapolis.
On Thursday night, Miller told reporters at the scene that the gunman was also shooting at cars as they tried to drive away.
“I saw a dead body, right behind a vehicle,” he said. “It started off in the parking lot and went into the building and went back into the parking lot.”
He added, “All I know is I’m about to go home and I’m calling off work … because f–k that.”
